Due to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, about 13-15 storms and tropical depressions are forecasted to arrive in the East Sea this year, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

Of which, there are about three to four storms and tropical depressions which will directly affect the land and will be concentrated in the central region.

A cold spell is predicted to arrive in the northern region from June 15, causing moderate rain to heavy rain as well as isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in some areas.

ENSO, short for El Niño-Southern Oscillation – the combination of El Niño and La Niña, is “a naturally occurring phenomenon that involves periodic fluctuation in sea surface temperature and air pressure in the equatorial Pacific Ocean,” and will complicate forecasts.

On June 14, a delegation of the National Committee for Search and Rescue arrived on Phu Quy Island, in the south central province of Binh Thuan, to direct the rescue of a foreign cargo vessel stranded near the island.

Chemroad Journey, of the Cayman Islands, en route from Singapore to China, was reported stranded at 6:30pm of June 10, about 28 nautical miles south of Phu Quy Island.

The vessel with 27 crew members, all of which are safe at present, was carrying about 30,000 tonnes of chemicals and 700 tonnes of oil.

Vice Chairman of the Binh Thuan provincial People’s Committee, Pham Van Nam said the ship owner was asked to carry out fire prevention measures in case of an oil spill.

Vietnam will provide the best possible conditions for the rescue, but all rescue plans must be approved by Vietnam’s agencies before they are implemented, Ty noted.
