KHÁNH HÒA — The Miss Universe Việt Nam 2017 beauty pageant final will be delayed until host Khánh Hòa Province recovers from Typhoon Damrey, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has ordered.

Earlier, the Performing Arts Department and Khánh Hòa’s People’s Committee asked the organising board of Miss Universe Việt Nam to postpone the semifinal in the wake of the typhoon; however, the event was still held last Saturday.

While the storm was sweeping the region, causing loss of lives and property, the semifinal of Miss Universe Việt Nam was held, causing anger among the public.

“Before the semifinal, we heard from the province’s Department of Culture and Sports that entertainment activities should be halted to concentrate on disaster prevention and rescue. We, therefore, put a stop to all our events which were to be held on November 3. At noon of November 4, when rain stopped, we decided to organise the semifinal as scheduled,” Trần Ngọc Nhật, a representative from the organising board, said.

Khánh Hòa Province is located directly in the storm’s path. The storm has claimed at least 23 lives in the province. Further, 700 houses have completely collapsed and more than 29,000 houses are damaged here. — VNS
